New ‘Mid-Century Modern’ style Dwelling, St Ives Road, St Ives

In 2015 we were commissioned by a local couple to design their new home, which was to be built in place of the existing dilapidated 1930s bungalow on the site that they had bought 2 years prior. The inspiration for the design was the ‘Stahl House’ by Pierre Koenig, completed in Los Angeles in 1962, which was Case Study House no. 22 from the now-infamous ‘Case Study House’ programme promoted by Arts & Architecture Magazine in the USA from 1945 to 1966. Stahl House is characterised by its L-shaped Plan, open-plan living space and glass walls, which provide a constant connection with the courtyard swimming pool and panoramic views over Los Angeles.

The brief of this project was to design a new dwelling in the style of the ‘Stahl House’ and ‘mid-century modern’ design in general; with a large open-plan Kitchen / Dining / Living space opening out to a semi-courtyard garden through large sliding glass doors, four Bedrooms, three Bathrooms and a Utility room, in a low-standing, single-storey structure with a flat roof. The new dwelling will also be sustainable in construction and use, with a highly-insulated fabric, renewable energy generation installations and locally sourced materials will be used wherever possible. We were granted Planning Permission for the new Dwelling in early May 2017 and hope to start on-site in Autumn 2017, so please check back here or our facebook or instagram pages for progress photos. In the meantime we hope you enjoy the 3D model images that we prepared for the Planning Application below.
